The anticipation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
