Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
